Our Florida Park Service was named a finalist for the 2011 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. Florida is currently the nation’s first and only two-time Gold Medal winner, receiving the award in 1999 and 2005.“It is an honor for our 160 state parks to be considered for this prestigious award,” said DEP Secretary Herschel T. Vinyard Jr., quoted in a news release. “Florida’s state parks serve more than 20 million visitors a year and provide countless recreational opportunities while conserving and protecting more than 700,000 acres of Florida’s natural environment.”

Veteran’s Day brought several celebrations to the sunny Emerald Coast of Florida. A parade was the featured event in Mary Esther,Florida. Wednesday many of the local Okaloosa County schools had celebrations to note the importance of this day.

The local ABC television stattion spent the week highlighting the multiple military installations in our region from Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, Whiting Field in Milton and of course the Pensacola Naval Air Station.

A return of the Blue Angels show is continuing from Thursday through Saturday along with a night time show that was held on Thursday evening.

Today as I write this it is a balmy 74 degrees, not bad for November!

Dog Daze is a wonderful event this coming Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Fort Walton Beach Landing downtown. This event is sponsored by the Ft. Walton Beach Chamber (www.fwbchamber.org). Doggies who are at least six months or older, current on their shots, and on a non-expandable leash are welcome. There are vendors, rescue groups, doggie specialties, pet sitters and more. 3 Dogs and a Chick Dog Bakery has a store across the street from the Park. Great event on the water!

What a fun weekend for you and your family to enjoy! The 32nd Annual Destin Seafood Festival will set up on the Destin Harbor at the Destin Fishing Fleet Marina, City of Destin Royal Melvin Heritage Park, and Fisherman’s Wharf from 4 to 10 p.m. Sept. 17, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 18 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 19. Headliners are Starship Starring Mickey Thomas on Friday and Loverboy on Saturday, along with favorite regional acts throughout the weekend. In addition to great music, attendees may enjoy fresh local seafood from some of the area’s restaurants, browse through arts and crafts booths, win prizes, and enjoy the beautiful views of our Destin Harbor.  Enjoy the weekend and decide to stay for a lifetime. A kids’ area, complete with rock climb, inflatables and more, will entertain the younger crowd.

Wow, what a beautiful day on Florida’s Gulf Coast! The only oil we have here is Sun Tan Oil! Our beaches are beautiful and our seafood is still excellent. Got some Shrimp off of a boat in Niceville yesterday and it’s delicious. So, all of the 7th Special Forces Group, Airborne, come on down and look around. You’re going to love it here!
